How easy is it to know whether a space will actually be accessible before you visit?
At WHEN Hub, accessibility is not something we add as an afterthought. It is part of how we want our space to work: as a place where more people can work, meet, create and feel that they belong.
That is why we are especially happy that WHEN Hub has become the first purple pin on the Perfectaki Able Accessibility Map, joining a network that makes accessibility information more readily available before every visit.
Accessibility is about more people
When we talk about accessibility, we often think first about mobility. A space that can welcome wheelchair users or parents with baby strollers is, of course, a more accessible space.
For us, however, access is broader than that. It includes people with visible and invisible disabilities, neurodivergent people, as well as people who may need a quieter environment, more personal space or different conditions in order to participate equally.
At WHEN Hub, we try to create a space that takes this complexity into account: a calm environment, with colours that are not overly intense, sound-insulated facilities and a setting designed to be as safe and inclusive as possible for people with different needs and characteristics.
And we know that accessibility is never a “finished” task. It is an ongoing process of learning, listening and improving.
Know before you go! – This is also what makes the Perfectaki Able initiative so important.
The Accessibility Map brings together information about spaces that have been assessed for their accessibility, helping people know more before deciding to visit them. Perfectaki Able is starting with mobility accessibility, carrying out on-site assessments and creating a Network of Accessibility Ambassadors, bringing together people with disabilities, mothers and other members of the community.
This approach matters to us because accessibility is not only about whether a door opens or whether there is a ramp. It is also about whether someone can know in advance what to expect, so they can make their choices with greater confidence and autonomy.
We learn, we listen and we keep making space.
We are proud that WHEN Hub is the first purple pin on the Perfectaki Able Accessibility Map, and even more so to be part of an effort that makes accessibility more visible.
We want WHEN Hub to be an accessible space today, but also one that continues to learn, listen and improve tomorrow.
Creating more accessible spaces is not the responsibility of one organisation or one initiative. It is a collective effort. And every point on the map can be another step towards a world where more people have real choices about where they work, meet, create and belong.
